About Know Your Rights NSW

Empower yourself. Know your rights during police interactions.

Know Your Rights NSW is a practical mobile app designed to help you understand your rights and police powers when dealing with police in New South Wales.

Most people only look this information up once they are already in the situation — whether it is a traffic stop, police questioning, a search, an arrest or another interaction with police.

Our focus is simple: make information easier to access, easier to understand and more useful in real situations.

Available on iOS and Android.

What We Do

We develop simple, easy-to-use tools that help people understand how their rights and police powers apply in everyday situations.

Our focus is on real world interactions with police, not legal theory, so you can access relevant information and make informed decisions when it counts.

Know Your Rights NSW is operated by Know Your Rights Pty Ltd, an independent Australian company.

Why It Matters

Police in New South Wales have significant legal powers, but those powers have limits and conditions.

Without understanding those boundaries, it can be difficult to know:

  • whether you are required to answer a question;
  • whether police need a particular power or authority to take an action;
  • whether you are being asked to consent to something;
  • what may happen during a search, arrest or detention; or
  • where to find relevant information quickly.

Know Your Rights NSW is designed to make that information easier to find and understand.
