Know Your Rights QLD - Privacy Policy.

Know Your Rights Pty Ltd

Effective date: 26/09/2026

1. Introduction

Know Your Rights Pty Ltd ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Know Your Rights QLD, a mobile application providing general educational information about rights and police powers in Queensland, Australia ("the App").

This Privacy Policy explains how information is collected, used, held and disclosed when you:

  • use the Know Your Rights QLD mobile app;
  • contact us for technical support, provide feedback or report a content issue; or
  • contact us about a privacy matter relating to the app.

We are committed to protecting user privacy and handling personal information responsibly.

Where applicable, we handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

Know Your Rights QLD is independently developed and operated by Know Your Rights Pty Ltd, a private company.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, authorised by, representing or acting on behalf of the Queensland Government, Queensland Police Service (QPS) or any other government agency.

2. Using the App Without an Account

You do not need to create an account, register or provide your name, email address, telephone number or other identifying information to access the app's ordinary content and features.

You can browse the app, search its content and use its informational features without identifying yourself to us.

The app is not designed to create a personal legal profile or case file about you.

Where app features such as Search or Check Your Situation use information you enter to identify relevant content, that information is used for the purpose of displaying relevant information to you.

We do not use your answers to create advertising profiles or to determine your legal rights or obligations on an individual basis.

3. Information Stored on Your Device

Certain information may be stored locally on your device so that app functions and preferences remain available between sessions.

Depending on the version of the app and features you use, this may include:

  • identifiers for information you have saved as a Favourite;
  • a record that you have acknowledged or accepted the app disclaimer;
  • app preferences or settings; and
  • other limited information required for the app to function.

This information is not part of an account based user profile maintained by Know Your Rights Pty Ltd.

We do not operate a user account service that synchronises favourites, personal profiles or legal information between your devices.

You can remove individual favourites within the app.

Locally stored app information may also be removable by clearing the app's data through your device settings, where supported, or by deleting the app and its associated data.

Simply offloading an app may not delete its stored data.

Your device's backup or restore services may also retain or restore app data according to your device settings and the privacy practices of Apple, Google or another service provider. We do not control those services.

4. Information We May Receive

4.1 Information You Provide to Us

The app itself does not require you to provide your name, email address or other contact information simply to access its content.

However, if you choose to contact us, we receive the information you provide.

This may include:

  • your name;
  • your email address;
  • other contact details you choose to provide;
  • the contents of your message;
  • screenshots or other attachments you choose to send;
  • information about the app feature or content you are reporting; and
  • technical information you voluntarily provide, such as your device type, operating system or app version.

If an app feature prepares an email using your device's email application, opening the email composer does not itself send information to us.

We receive the information only if you choose to send the email.

Your email provider may separately save a draft or process information in accordance with its own settings and privacy policy.

4.2 Technical and Diagnostic Information

Depending on your device, operating system, app version and the technical services used to operate and maintain the app, limited technical or diagnostic information may be generated or made available.

This may include information such as:

  • device type;
  • operating system and version;
  • app version;
  • installation or device related identifiers;
  • crash or error information;
  • performance information; and
  • limited information about how app functions are operating.

This information may be generated through mobile operating systems, app store platforms or third party technical services used for diagnostics, performance monitoring or maintaining the app.

We do not use technical or diagnostic information for the purpose of identifying individual users or creating profiles about their interactions with police.

5. How We Use Information

Information we receive may be used for purposes including:

  • providing technical support;
  • responding to enquiries;
  • diagnosing crashes, errors or technical problems;
  • maintaining the security, functionality and stability of the app;
  • understanding whether app functions are operating correctly;
  • investigating reported content errors;
  • considering suggestions and feedback;
  • reviewing potential updates or corrections;
  • responding to privacy enquiries or requests;
  • maintaining reasonable business records; and
  • complying with applicable legal obligations.

We do not use information submitted for app support merely to add you to an advertising or marketing list.

We do not sell or rent personal information.

We do not use information about your interaction with app content to create targeted advertising profiles.

6. Sensitive Information and Legal Matters

Know Your Rights QLD provides general educational information and app support.

It is not a legal practice and does not provide legal representation.

When contacting us, please avoid sending personal or sensitive information that is not reasonably necessary for us to deal with your enquiry.

In particular, please do not send unnecessary:

  • identity documents;
  • passwords or account credentials;
  • police records;
  • court documents;
  • confidential evidence;
  • detailed criminal allegations;
  • health or medical information; or
  • other highly sensitive personal information.

If information of this kind is sent to us without being requested, we will handle it having regard to the circumstances and applicable privacy requirements.

Correspondence with Know Your Rights Pty Ltd does not create a solicitor-client relationship and should not be treated as confidential legal communication or legal professional privilege.

7. Device Permissions, Tracking and Advertising

The app is designed to operate without requiring unnecessary access to information on your device.

Unless a feature specifically requires it and you are asked to provide the relevant device permission, the app does not require access to your:

  • precise location;
  • contacts;
  • call logs;
  • SMS messages;
  • microphone; or
  • camera.

Opening an external website, email application or other service from within the app transfers that activity to the relevant application or service.

Doing so does not give Know Your Rights Pty Ltd access to your email account, mailbox, browser history or other information held within those applications.

Know Your Rights QLD does not use your searches, situation answers or saved information to create behavioural advertising profiles.

We do not sell personal information to advertisers.

8. Apple, Google and App Store Services

Apple, Google, your device manufacturer and other platform providers may separately collect or process information when you:

  • purchase or download the app;
  • install or update the app;
  • use app store services;
  • use device backup or restore functions; or
  • allow diagnostic or usage information to be collected through your device.

This may include purchase information, device information, diagnostic data, crash information and app usage information.

Those providers handle that information according to their own terms, privacy policies and device settings.

Any reports or information made available to app developers by those platforms are separate from information you deliberately send to us through support correspondence.

9. Purchases and Payment Information

Know Your Rights QLD is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Where the app is offered as a paid download, payment is processed by the app store through which you purchase it.

Know Your Rights Pty Ltd does not receive or store your full payment card details or your Apple, Google or app store password.

Apple or Google may provide us with sales, transaction or financial reporting information relating to app purchases in accordance with their systems and policies.

10. Service Providers and Disclosure

We may use third party providers to assist with the operation of the app and our business.

Depending on the services being used, these providers may assist with matters such as:

  • email hosting;
  • website or infrastructure hosting;
  • app distribution;
  • diagnostics or crash reporting;
  • technical support;
  • data storage;
  • security; or
  • professional advice.

Our service providers may process limited information where reasonably necessary to provide those services.

People authorised to provide support or administer our systems may also access relevant information where necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

We may disclose information:

  • to service providers where reasonably necessary to provide or maintain our services;
  • to professional advisers, insurers or technical specialists where reasonably necessary;
  • with your consent;
  • where required or authorised by Australian law, a court or tribunal order; or
  • where otherwise permitted by applicable law.

Where information is disclosed for these purposes, we seek to limit the information disclosed to what is reasonably necessary.

The app is not designed to automatically report your searches, saved favourites or Check Your Situation answers to police or government agencies.

11. Overseas Processing

Some technology, communications, hosting, app store or service providers may operate infrastructure outside Australia.

As a result, information processed through:

  • email services;
  • technical or diagnostic services;
  • app store platforms;
  • external websites; or
  • other third party technology providers

may be processed or stored outside Australia.

The countries involved can depend on the provider, its infrastructure and the service being used.

Where applicable, we take reasonable steps in relation to overseas handling of personal information as required by Australian privacy law.

Third party providers may also independently handle information under their own privacy policies and legal obligations.

12. External Websites and Links

The app may contain links to:

  • Queensland legislation;
  • Queensland Government information;
  • Queensland Police Service information;
  • legal information services;
  • support organisations; and
  • other external websites.

When you open an external link, the relevant website operator may receive information ordinarily transmitted when accessing a website, including information such as your IP address, browser or device information and cookies.

Those organisations handle information according to their own privacy policies and practices.

Opening an external website does not cause us to provide that website with information you have saved locally in the app simply because you selected the link.

The inclusion of an external link does not imply that the external organisation endorses, sponsors or is affiliated with Know Your Rights Pty Ltd or Know Your Rights QLD.

13. Our Website

This Privacy Policy primarily describes information handling associated with the Know Your Rights QLD mobile app and related app correspondence.

Using our website is a separate activity.

When you visit a website, information may be processed through website hosting, security services, server logs, forms, cookies, analytics or embedded content.

Any privacy or cookie information provided in connection with our website should therefore be read together with this Privacy Policy where relevant.

Statements in this Privacy Policy about information stored locally within the mobile app should not be interpreted as meaning that no technical information can be generated when you access an external website.

14.  How We Hold and Protect Information

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information under our control against:

  • misuse;
  • interference;
  • loss;
  • unauthorised access;
  • unauthorised modification; and
  • unauthorised disclosure.

Measures may include restricting access to information and using appropriate technical and organisational safeguards.

Electronic communications and data transmitted through third party systems will generally rely on the security measures provided by those services.

However, no mobile device, email service, internet transmission or electronic storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Know Your Rights QLD is not designed as a secure repository for confidential legal evidence, identification documents or highly sensitive personal information.

Users should therefore avoid sending or storing unnecessary sensitive material through app support channels.

15.  Retention of Information

We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it is held, or as otherwise required or permitted by law.

Support correspondence and information voluntarily provided to us may be retained where reasonably necessary to:

  • respond to an enquiry;
  • investigate or resolve a technical issue;
  • maintain a record of reported errors or content corrections;
  • manage privacy enquiries;
  • maintain reasonable business records;
  • protect our legal or business interests; or
  • comply with legal, regulatory, accounting or record keeping requirements.

When information is no longer reasonably required, we may delete or de identify it, subject to applicable legal requirements and ordinary backup arrangements.

Deletion from an active system may not immediately remove every copy contained in system backups.

16.  Access, Correction and Deletion

You do not create a user account with Know Your Rights QLD.

Where information such as favourites, preferences or other app settings is stored only on your device, we cannot access or remotely delete that information for you.

You can generally manage locally stored information through the app or your device settings as described earlier in this policy.

If you contact us, we may hold personal information contained in that correspondence.

You may contact us to:

  • ask whether we hold personal information about you;
  • request access to personal information we hold about you;
  • request correction of information that is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading;
  • request deletion of information where appropriate; or
  • ask questions about how information has been handled.

We will consider requests having regard to applicable privacy law and any lawful or legitimate requirement to retain particular information.

We may need to take reasonable steps to confirm your identity before providing access to or changing personal information.

17.  Privacy Complaints

If you have a concern or complaint about the way we have handled your personal information, please contact us using the details below and provide enough information for us to understand the issue.

We will consider the concern and, where appropriate:

  1. acknowledge or review the complaint;
  2. investigate the circumstances;
  3. seek further information where reasonably necessary; and
  4. advise you of the outcome or any steps taken.

Where the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies to the matter, you may also have the right to make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

Information about privacy complaints is available from the OAIC at:

www.oaic.gov.au

18.  Young People

Know Your Rights QLD contains general educational information that may be relevant to interactions involving both adults and young people.

The ordinary browsing functions of the app do not require users to provide their date of birth, name or identifying details.

We do not knowingly use children's personal information for advertising or behavioural profiling through the app.

If a young person chooses to contact us, the information contained in their correspondence will be handled in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Young people should avoid sending unnecessary personal, sensitive or identifying information when requesting general app support.

19.  Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to:

  • the app or its features;
  • our information handling practices;
  • technology or service providers;
  • applicable law; or
  • privacy and security practices.

The current version of this Privacy Policy will identify its effective date at the beginning of the policy.

Where a change requires notice, consent or another step under applicable law, we will address that requirement before applying the change.
